Linn County family gets free car, groceries

MARION, Iowa (KCRG) - One family in Linn County is very thankful for a gift they received Wednesday night. Raylynn Lewis and her family found out they were the winners of a van.

It's part of the annual "Miles of Smiles" giveaway, which the Salvation Army and some local companies put on.

It was all a complete surprise. The family thought they were on their way to the Marion HyVee to see Santa Claus, but it turned out to be more than that...much more.

The program narrows down nominations it receives from community members. Then a selection committee chooses the winner.

The van is completely paid for along with taxes and insurance, and it was filled with groceries and gas cards.

Lewis said the car will be used to get her son to school and her husband to work. She's also expecting a baby girl, so she said it will
get her to and from doctor's appointments.
