January Student of the Month: Emma Johnson
Emma Johnson knew when she started high school in Belle Plaine that she wanted to get involved.
Now a sophomore, the 15-year-old is figuring out where her talent fits and how she can continue to help others.
Among the things Johnson enjoys, is crunching numbers at school. That's why she signed up for an accounting class.
"I took that last semester and I decided to take Accounting II this semester and I'm really good at it," she says.
Her teacher has noticed how much she enjoys the class.
"She's always willing to work, even when it's hard," says Business Education Teacher, Greg Prather. "She's willing to work with others and help others if that's needed."
Outside of class, Emma knew she wanted to be part of a team. "I really wanted to be involved in stuff and I tried out a bunch of sports and I really liked dance the best, so that's what I picked," says Johnson.
Dance Team Coach Jessica Henry knew Johnson was talented and encouraged her to join the team. "When we had our first tryout, she was very nervous about joining the team and it took some convincing," she says. "So she came to tryouts the first day and loved it. And she's been one of my best dancers since. She probably practices more than anyone; definitely a leader."
Emma is also on her student council and volunteers seniors at a local nursing home. "I help with bingo, I help serve lunches and dinners - I just do everything. I like to help them and they love it."
Her passion for people is what's drawing her to a career in cosmetology. She says it's also important for her to stay close to home.
