Pedestrian dies after being hit on U.S. 218

A Springville man has died from injuries he suffered when a semi struck him on U.S. 218 just south of Interstate 80 Thursday morning.

The Iowa State Patrol said around 5:20 a.m. 23-year-old John D. Riffle IV was crossing the highway in the northbound right lane for an unknown reason.

Troopers said 65-year-old Mark Meyer of Keosauqua was driving a semi northbound when the truck struck Riffle.

Emergency crews took Riffle to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash.
