Iowa DOT snow plow drivers asking for extra space
The Iowa Department of Transportation is asking drivers to watch for snow plow drivers during Friday's heavy snowfall.
The DOT said most of the big orange trucks have multiple snow plow blades on them to cover multiple lanes so they need the extra space.
TV9 rode along in a snow plow truck Friday morning on Interstate 80 in Coralville.
Most lanes were clear but a couple were still covered.
The DOT said the snow plow trucks have a lot of blind spots so other drivers should stay at least a couple car lengths back.
"Some trucks have eight levers that the operator has to maneuver and it's just tough to focus on everything at one time. We don't want to tag anybody," said Highway Maintenance Supervisor, Tim Zeimet.
The blades reach a good 5 or 6 ft. beyond the truck when you're passing them.
