Iowa City high school holds vigil for student
Hundreds of students and community members gathered at Iowa City City High School to remember J.C. Meardon.
Meardon died from injuries suffered when a minivan hit him while he and two other teens were playing a game using their cell phones two days ago.
City High Principal John Bacon sent an email Wednesday morning stating J. C. Meardon died overnight. Meardon was a junior and played on the soccer team.
They held candles, sang a few songs and shared memories about Meardon. At the end of the vigil students lit paper lanterns. People also wore yellow because it was Meardon's favorite color.
Miles Morrow grew up with Meardon and says it was neat see people from Iowa City City High School and Iowa City West come together.
"It means a lot to him to see all of these people coming together kind of the City, West rivalry going away," Morrow said.
Meardon's coach retired his jersey number 12 during the vigil.
