CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The first day of Spring may not come for a few days, but people at Iowa Brewing Company rung in the new season with a different kind of celebration.
The "Blessing of the Bock" is a 22-year-old tradition that started at Stone City Brewing in Solon. The tradition now carries on at Iowa Brewing Company in Cedar Rapids. (Aaron Scheinblum, KCRG)
The celebration is called "Blessing of the Bock" and it featured a presentation from brew masters and beer-lovers blessing their bock-style of beer at the brewery.
The ceremony is 22 years old, started by brew master of the Stone City Brewing Jeff Allen. The Solon brewery is no longer in operation, but the tradition continued in Cedar Rapids Saturday, with Allen serving as "Father Hops" and the leader of the ceremonial dedication.
Now the Cedar Rapids brewery plays host and brews the spring-time beer. Organizers said the event brings pints full of support every year.
"I've been to a couple of different bock blessings before we opened here at Iowa Brewing Company, and they're a heck of a lot of fun," said Mike Wing, the head brew master at Iowa Brewing Company.
"We have a loyal following, as you can see by everybody out in the bar area, and they attend every one of them we do," Allen said.
For those that missed "Father Hops" and the rest of the ceremony, they will have to wait until next year to take part in the next "Blessing of the Bock."
