IA DOT plan would use tolls to pay for I80 rebuilding
A new report by the Iowa Department of Transportation says adding tolls could help cover costs for a $3.8-billion project to rebuild Interstate 80.
The project would include widening and rebuilding I-80 over a five year period, between 2022 and 2026.
It would be financed with long-term bonding by toll fees over 35 years.
Automobiles would be charged eight cents per mile, while trucks would be charged 24 cents per mile.
The DOT would install 11 tolling stations across Iowa.
The DOT says current federal and state highway funds are not enough to meet all of Iowa's highway needs.
