Hy-Vee at Midday: Diabetes Awareness Month

By  |

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- November is Diabetes Awareness month. Over the next week, Hy-Vee dietitians will be offering free diabetes supermarket tours at Hy-Vee food stores, to help people prevent and manage diabetes.

Today's Hy-Vee dietitian expert, Judy Fitzgibbons, says a supermarket tour, with a Hy-Vee dietitian, will clear up several myths about diet and diabetes. Below is a list of the locations and times of area diabetes supermarket tours and other diabetes events. If you can't make one of these, your favorite Hy-Vee store dietitian will be happy to schedule another time to walk the aisles with you.

Check out these myths vs facts about eating well for diabetes:

*Good meals for diabetes are boring. Fact or Myth?
Myth. Hy-Vee frequently brings in new, exciting brands with diabetes-friendly versions. Walking the aisles, your Hy-Vee dietitian will show you new flavorful options like the new Gustare Vita imported sauces and whole wheat pastas. By the way, be sure to keep using your Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Plus Perks card to enter the drawing for a chance to win the
Alfa Romeo Julia sports car. When you buy any Gustare Vita pasta or sauce using your Perks Plus card, you'll get an extra entry into the drawing.

*Sugar content is the most important line on the nutrition facts label. Fact or myth?
Myth. Total carbohydrate is more important than sugar. During a store tour, your Hy-Vee dietitian will show you how to use the nutrition facts label to keep your blood sugars healthy and show you some sweet options. One of our favorites is Emerald Cocoa Almonds.

*People with diabetes should cook everything from scratch. Fact or myth?
Myth. Your Hy-Vee dietitian will show you time-saving ideas for fast-fix meals and snacks that keep blood sugars down and save time. Many frozen meals offer healthy options for busy days. New Johnsonville Grilled Chicken is an easy starting point for a healthy, fast meal.

Give yourself a health break in the aisles with your Hy-Vee dietitian during one of these times. Tours are free. If you can’t make it, call your Hy-Vee dietitian for a tour at a time more convenient for you.
