CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Snow spreads in from the south this afternoon, mainly after 3 p.m. Overnight, snow continues and will be heavy at times. South of I-80, a bit of freezing rain or sleet may mix in with the snow early on.
Snow will gradually taper off on Tuesday, but as the snow gets lighter toward lunchtime, the wind will be getting stronger. Northwest winds kick in at 20 to 30 mph, gusting to 40, causing blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility in open areas. This will make it even harder for crews to keep roads cleared off.
Snowfall amounts around 6" and greater should happen generally near and north of Interstate 80, with the potential for locally higher totals mainly in the Tri-States area. Snowfall amounts will be lower in far southern Iowa.
We have a break on Wednesday before a slight chance of a wintry mix comes by on Thursday, followed by a snow chance Friday.
