Eight years after flood waters destroyed Hancher Auditorium on the University of Iowa campus, the university is getting ready to open the next Hancher.

On Tuesday, the university announced a collaboration with the Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet for its first season.

The University announced a new choreographed version of the Nutcracker will be performed at Hancher Auditorium this December.

Five performances of the new Nutcracker will take place from Dec. 1 through 4.

After, the Nutcracker will be performed in downtown Chicago at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University for its "World Premier."

This new version of the Nutcracker takes place in downtown Chicago during the 1893 World Fair.

Hancher Auditorium's Executive Director says the partnership between the University and Joffrey Ballet is the perfect way to get the Nutcracker launched.

"We're really in essence a sort of laboratory we get things started here, we get things going then they are launched and the University of Iowa and Hancher are a big part of this," Hancher Executive Director Chuck Swanson said.

Construction of Hancher Auditorium is expected to be completed by June 1.

Open houses will be held September 9th through 11th where anyone is welcome to come tour the lobby and get a behind the scenes look at the theater.
