Iowa City Cohousing is a group of Iowa City locals working to create a new housing alternative in the city.

The idea stems from the “cohousing” model started in Denmark. It creates a space where many generations can live a sustainable and minimalist life in the same area. The group is in the process of building 36 eco-friendly residences around a green space filled with community gardens.

The homes allow privacy as well as a common area where families can cook and share meals together several times a week. Iowa City Cohousing purchased 7.8 acres near downtown. The project is approved by the Iowa City Council as well as the planning and zoning commission.

The land is in preparation for building, and will be move in ready next year. The group is holding an information session for those interested in joining the community at Uptown Bill’s Coffee House on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.
