Grassley asks Senate for unanimous consent for Northey nomination

WASHINGTON (KCRG-TV9) -- Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Wednesday asked for unanimous consent for the Senate to confirm Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey to serve as an undersecretary in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been blocking the confirmation process for months.

"So far I have not been successful with two conversations with Senator Cruz to get him to back off. He is very adamant that even though he doesn't have anything against Northey whatsoever, that the Northey nomination can be used as a tool for me to back off and harm the ethanol industry," Grassley said.

The Senate Agriculture Committee voted unanimously in October 2017 to send Northey's nomination to the full Senate.
