Free Speech bill passes Iowa subcommittee

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Some Iowa lawmakers are trying to protect free speech in public universities.

A Senate Education Subcommittee passed the bill last week.

One part of the bill states a University or "place of higher education" cannot deny benefits or privileges to a student organization based on the group's requirements for leadership.

This comes after the University of Iowa tried to remove the group-- Business Leaders in Christ-- as a student organization for requiring members to follow a religious "faith statement".
