Former Speaker of the House, Iowa Sec. of Agriculture Dale Cochran dies

URBANDALE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Former Speaker of the Iowa House and Iowa Sec. of Agriculture Dale Cochran has died.

89-year-old Cochran passed away on August 27 in West Des Moines.

He was born in Fort Dodge on November 20, 1928, and later graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1946.

Cochran went on to study at Iowa State University and graduated in 1950 with an Agriculture degree.

Cochran married Jeannene Hirsch in 1952 and together they had three children.

Cochran spent time working in the National Farm Organization in the 1950s and 1960s before he was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1964.

Cochran went on to serve as Speaker of the House from 1975-1979. He later served three terms as the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture beginning in 1986.

His visitation is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be Friday at Dunn's starting at 11 a.m. with lunch afterward.
