A Manchester man escaped injury when his pickup truck caught fire about 4 miles east of Independence.

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office said it happened about 7:45 p.m. Sunday near 220th Street and North Doris Avenue.

Investigators said Shane Mason was driving west on 220th Street when he began to smell a strong odor of gasoline. He stopped to investigate and the truck ignited when he stepped out of it.

There were no injuries. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
