FARLEY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Our Town Farley is a community where parents are welcoming a new option for learning in a unique building.
Western Dubuque Montessori School just opened in March and as of now, 15 kids attend. It not only offers an alternative learning environment, it also addresses demand for childcare in Farley and Dubuque County.
Director Melissa Demmer bought a church building last fall and renovated it into the space it is today. She's licensed to accept 85 kids, infant through pre-K.
Demmer and her teachers practice the Montessori Method, which encourages kids to learn at their own pace. She says it's been helpful in an environment with different age groups.
"The children have been taking a liking to the Montessori method. None of them had been in a previous Montessori school. So that's really awesome to see," Melissa Demmer, Western Dubuque Montessori School director, said.
Demmer says March was an odd time of year to open. She's anticipating more preschoolers to join in the fall.
