CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Jacob Markwell’s sudden death has left his friends and family with a heavy weight to bear. 18-year-old Markwell died after he lost control of his truck and it rolled over Saturday.
“He was just an awesome, awesome kid,” Markwell’s brother Derek Ross said. “He was just finding himself, and getting comfortable with who he was, and getting into woodworking and carpentry.”
Markwell’s best friend Dalton Tatro said he was one of the most caring people he had ever met.
“There’s just so much about him that I can’t even put into words,” Tatro said. “I didn’t matter what color your skin was, who you were, how you looked at things, he liked you for you.”
Family said Markwell loved to talk, loved his truck, and his fiancé Haley Harris. He just proposed to her the night before the accident.
“He tried to give me his world,” Harris said. “He didn’t ask for much in return, he was always there for everybody else.”
Markwell’s sister Chelsea Ross said even though he was her little brother, he made a big impact.
“Nothing about him was little at all; he was such a big presence in life,” Ross said. “He didn’t have a lot of time to do much, but he had to experience a lot of heartbreak and it really made him into a caring person instead of a hard person, and that is incredible for someone to be able to do. I’ll never forget that.”
Markwell’s father said he was a registered organ donor, and he will continue to help even after death.
The family is planning a memorial ride in Markwell’s honor. They have not yet set a date.
