One killed in early morning house fire in Evansdale

EVANSDALE, Iowa (KCRG) - One man was killed in a house fire in Evansdale on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Albert Schmitt was removed from the home by first responders and taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Schmitt did not live in the house, which was owned by his parents.

Evansdale firetrucks were sent to 429 Morrell Avenue NE around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday after a neighbor called 911 to report smelling smoke. Firefighters arrived to flames shooting through the roof in the back of the house.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy of the body.
