CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) – With holiday shopping season beginning, plenty of people will head to the big name stores for Black Friday. The next morning, small businesses across the country are asking for you to give them a try.

November 26 is Small Business Saturday. It started in 2010, and has grown to a nationwide initiative. Breathing Room Yoga is just one of many businesses in Cedar Rapids preparing for sales.

“I think it’s a really cool idea to give the gift of experience instead of material things. I think we all have plenty of stuff, and I think we’re at a loss of things to give because we’re thinking of stuff. If you can give someone an experience, it’s something they can remember for the rest of their lives,” Owner Sarah Driscoll said.

She is offering gift certificates and small handmade items in her studio. Her goal is to guide people to finding peace in their lives.

“We work really hard, we overindulge, and to just find a little space and a little stillness. Everybody needs it,” Driscoll said.

Supporting small businesses isn’t only good for the business. The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance said there’s plenty of benefits to shopping local.

“It creates jobs in our community. It’s important to spend your dollars here because they stay here. They support our local community. They support the local economy, and it’s a great opportunity to support those business owners who want to be here, and who have decided to stay here,” Marketing Director Melissa McCarville.

70% of business in the Metro Economic Alliance are small businesses. The Alliance provides support to help businesses like Driscoll’s thrive. She said that’s something important to her.

“We’re all in this together in our community, so we have to support each other and help each other’s businesses succeed,” Driscoll said.
