DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced Tuesday it's planning to close its Dubuque location. The organization says it's stopping its clinical services immediately. A spokesperson says the official closing date will depend on when the building sells.
The official last day will depend on when the building is sold. In the meantime, the office will maintain regular hours and offer non-clinical services such as supply visits and pregnancy tests. Telemedicine abortion services will also remain available at the Dubuque office.
Dubuque Planned Parenthood is located at 3365 Hillcrest Road. The next closest Planned Parenthood is roughly 60 miles away in Cedar Rapids on 3425 First Avenue Southeast.
Planned Parenthood of the Heartland says there simply isn't the demand for their services in Dubuque, the way there is in other communities.
The announcement is Dubuque is drawing cheers from Dubuque County Right to Life, who has long protested Planned Parenthood's existence in Dubuque.
Planned Parenthood of the Heartland Spokesperson Angie Remington says the organization made several moves to re-allocate resources back in 2014. At that time the Dubuque location wasn't growing, but they decided to wait before making any changes. Now, two years later, Planned Parenthood says the number of patient visits has stayed the same in Dubuque.
Meanwhile the Cedar Rapids office is seeing an increased demand so resources from Dubuque will be shifted towards Cedar Rapids.
Protestors from Dubuque County Right to Life say they have stood outside Planned Parenthood every minute the Dubuque clinic has been open since the clinic first opened in August of 2008.
Dubuque County Right to Life Executive Director Marian Bourek said, "We would like to take a bit of credit for that. I'm not sure honestly that we can but we know we have saved at least 19 babies by simply being there. "
Bourek says those 19 mothers have come to Dubuque County Right to Life to tell them they changed their mind about having an abortion after talking with the protesters outside the Planned Parenthood building.
The Planned Parenthood in Dubuque does not and has never performed surgical abortions.
Planned Parenthood says no staff layoffs are part of the closure.
