ANKENY, Iowa (KCCI) — Central Iowa authorities have released dashcam video showing the dramatic moments leading up to an Ankeny officer fatally shooting a robbery suspect who was wielding what appeared to be a handgun.
Police accused 31-year-old Christopher Leonard, of Springfield, Missouri, of robbing a Hy-Vee gas station on Oralabor Road in Ankeny in September 2018. Authorities said Leonard left the gas station and was near a Kum and Go convenience store when he pointed a weapon at Ankeny police Officer Todd Webb.
In the dashcam video, you can see a responding officer approaching Leonard, who then raises the weapon and points it toward officers. One of the officers can be heard yelling, “Get on the ground. Show me your hands. Drop it.”
Webb, a 12-year veteran of the Ankeny Police Department, then shot and killed Leonard.
Webb was placed on administrative leave after the shooting but has since returned to work.
A grand jury decided late last month it would not indict Webb, saying the shooting death of Leonard was justified.
Family members who live in the Quad Cities area told KWQC that Leonard was the father of four and had just moved to Springfield, Missouri, from Clinton.
