MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Cornell College finally got a chance to play in its brand new football stadium Saturday night.
The new Dave Van Metre Field at Ash Park played host to the long standing rivalry between the Coe College Kohawks and Cornell College Rams.
The field is now all turf, they put in a new scoreboard, as well as remade the stands. There is still construction left to do- plans are in place to add a new concession stand as well as permanent restrooms, but those with the college say they could not be happier to finally open up the field to the team and the fans.
"Dave Van Metre has given us a wonderful gift, and so many people have helped contribute," said Keith Hackett, Director of Athletics for Cornell College. "But it's great for us to be able to honor him and thank him officially for the wonderful gift he's given to our athletic department and our college."
Van Metre was accompanied by 26 of his family members as the field was officially dedicated in his name- he was also named an honorary alumnus to Cornell College.
The Kohawks spoiled the opener for the Rams- Coe College won 42-7 on the road.
