Cedar Rapids man pulls over to check on woman, saves her life
A woman says she's alive today because of the quick thinking and kindness of a stranger.
The day after Christmas, Vicki Witte was driving along Highway 13 in Linn County when her heart stopped. She managed to pull over. A Cedar Rapids man named Arturo Melendez pulled over to make sure she was O.K.
"He busted out the window, unlocked the door, pulled her out and started CPR on the highway," Witte's daughter, Brandi Barnard said.
Witte even got to thank him in person, he visited her in the hospital and has been calling to make sure she's okay.
Melendez says he didn't have any CPR training, but said he did what he had seen in movies.
"I had to do something, I had to do something for her because I knew she was dying in front of me and I feel like I have to do something," Melendez said.
He says it's an amazing feeling to help save a life.
"He's my hero as far as I'm concerned," Witte said.
"He will not be forgotten that's for sure we will always keep in touch with him and always be thankful and grateful that he stopped," Barnard said.
They hope their story encourages others to help.
"If you see anybody even a little bit of distress or acting funny it doesn't hurt to pull over and find out what's going on," Witte said.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the medical expenses https://www.gofundme.com/ak87w-vickis-road-to-recovery.
