CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Cedar Rapids officials said they are taking precautionary measures to address moderate flood stage water levels on the Cedar River.
"Impacts at moderate flood stage are minimal, and generally consist of closing low-lying roads and conducting underground storm sewer measures," the city said in a press release Thursday.
The city said this will be happening in the Czech Village and Kingston Village Districts, as well as in the northwest Time Check neighborhood.
Crews will be plugging underground storm sewer drains and positioning concrete cones to cover low-lying stormwater inlets as needed, the city said.
Officials said they don't expect any impacts to homes and businesses.
Current road closures associated with either elevated river levels or localized spring flooding from Prairie Creek include:
- 1st Street NW closed between Peen Street and E Avenue
- J St SW at the intersection of Hawkeye Downs Rd SW
- Hawkeye Downs Rd SW closed between 6th St SW and J St SW
- Bowling St SW closed south of 33rd Ave at the Prairie Creek Bridge
- Otis Road
The city said more road closures are expected in the coming days, including Old River Road SW, additional segments of 1st Street NW, and Ellis Blvd NW between Ellis Lane and 18th Street.
