Cedar Rapids Washington student arrested after gun found

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) -- A Cedar Rapids Washington High School student was arrested after a gun was found as he was being escorted from the school.

According to an e-mail sent to parents by the Cedar Rapids Community School District, the student was being escorted from the school by Cedar Rapids police "for an unrelated matter" when the gun was found.

The district says all students and staff are safe and the school day was not disrupted. The district added, "most students are likely not aware of this activity."

Cedar Rapids police say a 16-year-old male was arrested at the high school for valid warrants. They say the the handgun was found during a search of the teen.

Police add there was no actual threat made to the school and there is no indication he was planning to to use the gun at school.

No other information has been released at this time.
