CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) - A man was arrested in Cedar Falls after an incident with a sword that led to another man's thumb being severed.

According to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Zachary Aaron Kremer,
22, was arrested Sunday for felony assault causing serious injury.

Police responded to a call around 2:25 a.m. Sunday morning in Cedar Falls and found a man bleeding with a missing thumb. He was initially transported to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, and later the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City by helicopter.

Kremer was allegedly wielding the sword to break a stick that the victim had in his hands, but mistakenly missed. Police said other witnesses disputed that a stick was even involved, instead that Kremer was handling the sword without care.

Court filings said that Kremer allegedly swung the sword at the victim and his girlfriend intentionally, with the blade hitting the victim's thumb while he tried to protect his girlfriend.
