WASHINGTON (KCRG-TV9) Iowa First District Representative Rod Blum opposes President Donald Trump's plan to cut funding for cancer research. The President's proposed budget would decrease the National Health Institute's funding by about a fifth, or about 6 million dollars.

Blum addressed the issue during a committee hearing in Washington on Wednesday. The congressman said he opposes government interference on a lot of issues, but said cancer research is not one of them.

"One of the things we should be involved in is curing these hideous diseases and as for the 21st Century Cures Act, and I stand against the president's proposed budget cuts, and we need to be spending a lot more, not less in these areas," sand Blum.

Heads of several cancer centers spoke at Wednesday's hearing.
