CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Blairs Ferry Road NE in Cedar Rapids will be closed all weekend at C Avenue starting at 10:00 p.m. Friday.
The city tells us they will be making the existing lanes narrower so they can add left turn lanes on Blairs Ferry Road in order for traffic to turn onto C Avenue.
On Friday city crews will begin shaving off the pavement and then make new pavement markings to add a second left turn lane eastbound and westbound on Blairs Ferry Road.
The work will also include adding new traffic signals to the left turn lanes.
John Witt, the city's Traffic Engineering Program Manager, says adding these turn lanes is necessary because of the amount of traffic they get in the area.
"There's significant amount of delay during the AM-PM peak hours out here so by adding the dual left turn lanes it's going to improve operations for people that are driving on Blairs Ferry and on C Avenue through the intersection and it'll help improve safety as well, we get really congested intersections it can lead to safety concerns," says Witt.
The city says the work will also help cut down on the number of crashes they have at the intersection.
This weekend if you're coming from I-380, you'll be detoured south down Rockwell Drive onto Collins Road and back to Blairs Ferry Road by Northland Avenue.
If you're coming from Marion traveling towards the interstate, you'll be detoured south on Northland Avenue, down to Collins Road and then back Blairs Ferry through Rockwell Drive.
Blairs Ferry is expected to reopen at C Avenue by 6 a.m. on Monday.
