UPDATE: Sheriff: Black Hawk County child died of medical complication

BLACK HAWK COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9 ) -- The Black Hawk County Sheriff said an autopsy shows the death of a 6-year-old child Wednesday morning was due to a medical complication.

In a news release, Sheriff Tony Thompson said toxicology tests showed the child died of Sepsis due to acute peritonitis due to acute appendicitis.

Investigators have closed the case.

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office says they are investigating the death of a child.

Captain Mark Herbst says deputies were called to 7114 E. Dunkerton Road at around 7:40 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a child not breathing.

Herbst says the child was taken to Allen Hospital by Dunkerton Ambulance where the child was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be performed by the Iowa State Medical Examiner.

The age and gender of the child have not been released.
