Beckman coach Tom Jenk Jr. battles brain cancer
On Thursday, the Beckman baseball team opened up its season at home versus Dubuque Hempstead. But it wasn't your normal home opener.
For the first time in 41 years, longtime head coach Tom Jenk Jr. was watching the game from the stands.
He's currently battling Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer and it all started on Christmas day.
"I was playing on the floor with my new grandson that my daughter just had," said Jenk. "And everybody got up to go eat and I couldn't get up. Next thing I know, I woke up in Iowa City and I just had a tumor removed from my brain."
While the past few months have been tough for Jenk and the team. They all have the same goal: make it down to the state title game at Principal Park in Des Moines."
"They'd be very disappointed in me if I gave up," said Jenk.
