A woman from Linn County has claimed her $10,000 prize from the Mega Millions.

Dana Derby from Marion is one of four people who bought tickets in Iowa and won a $10,000 prize in Tuesday’s $1.54 billion jackpot drawing.

“I guess you never know what a day will bring, do you?” Derby said with a laugh Wednesday as she claimed her prize at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.

The 58-year-old who works at a bank in Marion said she didn't buy a ticket for Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing until her son in Colorado sent her a text message of the line he was waiting in.

“I’m like, ‘You know, I should swing by a and grab a ticket on my way home.’ “If he wouldn’t have texted me that picture, I probably wouldn’t have stopped,” she added.

Derby bought two tickets at Kum & Go in Marion, but didn't check her numbers until she stopped at a Hy-Vee on Wednesday.

“Honestly, I stood there and said, ‘Oh, my gosh!’ like 20 times,” Derby said of the moment her ticket was scanned.

Derby says she may spend her winnings to screen her deck at home.

The numbers selected in Tuesday’s drawing were 5-28-62-65-70 and Mega Ball 5. The Megaplier was 3.
