For the second time in less than two years, a Cedar Rapids restaurant location is closing to reopen as a new restaurant.

Axels announced it will close for good on January 21st at its building on Blairs Ferry Road NE across from Target. Instead, an Iowa City based restaurant will take over the space and open this spring. The release does not name the group taking over the space.

The building was originally build and opened as a restaurant in 2016 called Rock Top Bar and Grill. That closed after just a few months and reopened a few months later as Axels. The building features a prominent rooftop seating area overlooking Blairs Ferry Road NE.

In announcing the closing, Riley's also mentioned plans for a new downtown Cedar Rapids restaurant called Bourbon Creek Smokehouse but did not give an exact location or more details.
