CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- ALDI plans to open a store at the site of the former Fresh Market grocery story along Collins Road in Cedar Rapids.

Site plans and tenant lists from the developer of Collins Crossing, RCG Ventures, lists ALDI occupying the 24,000 square foot store.

Fresh Market closed its store at the Collins Crossing, across from Lindale Mall in 2016. It was one of 13 Fresh market stores to close nationwide at the time. Fresh Market is a specialty grocery store focused on fresh, local and organic foods.

The chain already has three stores in the Cedar Rapids area and several others throughout Eastern Iowa.

Aldi focuses on economical grocery shopping.

"We take a simple, cost-effective approach to grocery shopping that saves shoppers on their grocery bills," Aldi says on its website. "In fact, smart shoppers have found that switching from national brands to ALDI exclusive brands can save them up to 50 percent on their weekly must-haves."

ALDI says the new store will be coming to Cedar Rapids in 2019 and construction will begin this coming winter.
