Absentee ballot bill advances to Iowa Senate

A bill that would require postal barcodes on all absentee ballots in Iowa is heading to the Iowa Senate. The House passed it unanimously Thursday afternoon.
The bill would prevent a recurrence of what happened last November in House District 55. Republican Michael Bergan beat Democrat Kayla Koether by just nine votes, but 29 absentee ballots in Winneshiek County were not counted because they didn't have the right kind of bar code.
A post office scan proved later that they had been mailed on time. Koether appealed, but the Republican led Iowa House decided those votes should not be counted.
