AAUP sanctions UI for hiring Pres. Harreld
The American Association of University Professors added the University of Iowa to its list of sanctioned colleges
The AAUP based that decision on the Board of Regents hiring of President Bruce Harreld, in spite of faculty objections. Harreld has faced heat since he became president last fall for not having any academic administrative experience.
The association says the board didn't allow faculty to play a "meaningful" role in the selection of a final candidate. The president of Iowa's AAUP chapter asked for the investigation that resulted in these sanctions.
AAUP says the sanction list informs the academic community of schools that infringed generally accepted standards.
The University of Iowa can take certain actions to get off the sanction list.
