DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Dubuque native Kayla Banwarth has made it onto the US Olympic volleyball team.

Banwarth attended Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque and went on to play volleyball at the University of Nebraska.

She's been playing on Team USA since she graduated in 2011.

Kayla's mom Ann Banwarth says she and her husband have known Kayla would be a great athlete ever since she was little.

She says the family can't wait to cheer on team USA in Rio.

"They're really a team so they truly do love each other and I've witnessed that, so it's pretty cool. So I hope they can all come together again one more time and bring home a gold medal. That would be awesome," she said.

Her mom also adds that Kayla and the family have been hoping for nearly five years that she would make the Olympic team.
