5th Street boom in Coralville continues, more development planned

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9)- Coralville's 5th Street is one of the fastest growing areas in the city, and more development is on the way.

Blaine Thomas, the developer behind the 808 on 5th complex, says he has plans to add several new buildings in the area.

"I think you'll [soon] have a very pedestrian downtown area in Coralville," Thomas said Wednesday.

Last year Thomas added a building with 72 apartment units and retail space near the intersection of 10th Ave. and 5th St. Next week he plans to open a similar building next door. In July of 2017 he plans to open a third building near 6th Ave., and around the same time he has plans to break ground on a 100-unit building nearby.

"There is a fifth and possibly sixth building in the works too," Thomas said.

The addition of the buildings is part of a bigger city initiative to transform 5th Street in Coralville. Last year the city wrapped up work on a massive reconstruction project of the entire street, which included new lighting, pavement and additional recreational trails.

The city also recently moved the old city hall building to establish an "Old Town" area on 5th Street, which includes a nearby historic school house.
