ITALY, Texas (KCRG) - The Texas Department of Public Safety says an 11-year-old boy from Iowa has died after a crash in Ellis County.
Authorities were called to a two-vehicle crash at around 6:30 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 35.
An investigation found a van was disabled in the center lane of southbound Interstate 35 due to a previous crash when the van rear-ended another vehicle.
While disabled in the lane, a pickup driving southbound in the center lane rear-ended the van, as it was dark out.
The driver of the van, 20-year-old Spencer Gull from Guttenberg, Iowa, was taken by ambulance to Parkland hospital in Dallas with non-life threatening injuries.
Also in the vehicle, 36-year-old Dustin Hayes from Dike, Iowa was taken by air ambulance to the Parkland hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities say an 11-year-old boy in the van died at the scene of the crash.
Another child in the van, a 13-year-old girl, was taken by ambulance to the Childrens hospital in Dallas for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the truck, 33-year-old Emmanuel Compos-Carrera from Dallas, was taken to Parkland hospital by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries.
The Italy Police Department says the southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about three hours because of the crash.
The Texas Department of Public Safety was assisted by the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, Ellis County Fire Department (ESD6), Italy Police Department, Italy Fire Department, Forreston Fire Department, and Texas Department of Transportation.
Sgt. Sara Warren says the accident is still under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
