WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) - Waterloo City Councilwoman Margaret Klein is calling for the resignation of Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald after “frequent trips out of town, often in search of new employment.”

It comes after the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports Fitzgerald is in the running for the police chief position with the Austin, Texas Police Department.

In a statement released on Thursday, Klein said Fitzgerald has made it clear he has no interest in remaining in Waterloo.

Fitzgerald was also previously reported to be in the running for the positions in the police department in Albuquerque, New Mexico in January and the Memphis Police Department in March.

In her statement, Klein described Fitzgerald’s job searches as a “slap in the face to the taxpayers who hired him only one year ago.”

“Leadership at the Waterloo Police Department is needed now more than ever. Our community and police officers deserve a chief who is invested in the future of Waterloo,” Klein said in the statement. “I believe it is in the best interest of all that Chief Fitzgerald step aside and allow for a new chief to take the reins. I call for his immediate resignation.”

Klein recently announced she is running for mayor of Waterloo.
