CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Cedar Rapids Police Department issued an update on its ongoing investigation into the crash involving two kids on a scooter and a car that happened on Wednesday afternoon.

The children, an eight-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy, sustained life-threatening injuries and were taken to UIHC where they remain hospitalized.

The collision happened near 15th Street and Mount Vernon Road SE on Wednesday just after 4 p.m.

Officials said the two boys were riding a single VeoRide electric scooter in the alley between 15th Street and Camburn Court SE and were hit by a car when they rode onto Mount Vernon Road SE.

The car was heading westbound on Mount Vernon Road Se, driven by a 64-year-old man. He was not hurt in the collision.

Officials said according to witnesses and video evidence, the children went onto Mount Vernon Road SE and the scooter without stopping at a stop sign.

There are no charges pending in the crash, but Candler was cited for Driving While License Under Suspension and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability.

The investigation is ongoing
