DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) - The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines introduced a pair of Red River Hogs on Wednesday.

They’re named Shallot and Truffle. They came to Des Moines from San Diego over the winter.

Zoo officials said Shallot, the male, is 3 years old, and has warts on his muzzle. Truffle, the 10-year-old female, does not.

Zoo officials hope the pair will breed and have piglets.

They can be found next to the rhino habitat at the zoo.

They are most active at dawn or dusk and spend their days wallowing in mud to stay cool, to protect from sunburn and bugs.
