Background checks for gun sales soar to record high in March
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The FBI conducted a record number of background checks related to gun sales in March 2021.
The statistic, which is used as a key indicator used to predict gun purchase sales across the United States, went over 4 Million for the second time in 2021. The highest number of background checks the FBI conducted in a month before 2021 was 3.9 Million.
The FBI conducted 4,691,738 background checks in March 2021. That beat the previous record set in January 2021, which was 4,417,804 background checks.
Iowa has also seen a 43% increase in background checks in the first three months of 2021.
And that increase is being seen at gun stores like Palo outdoors. Matt Schrantz, who is a manager at Palo Outdoors, said he’s having a hard time keeping product on the shelves
He said recent conversations about gun control stemming from mass shootings and the election are causing an increase in sales.
“The Demand is very very high,” Schrantz said “In particular guns, ones that they are trying to outlaw obviously and all that. People want to make sure they have one before things go the wrong direction.”
He said he expects those numbers to get even higher in Iowa because of legislation that makes it easier to get a gun. Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill April 2 to end the requirement that Iowans obtain a permit to buy a gun. That goes into place later in the year.
Schrantz said he has already had people reach out to figure out that new process. But, said he encourages everyone to still get that education for safety reasons.
