Iowa City park renamed for Pulitzer Prize-winning Black author
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Creekside Park in Iowa City is now James Alan McPherson Park.
The Iowa City city council unanimously approved the name change at its Tuesday meeting.
The new name honors the life and career of Iowa City resident and University of Iowa professor James Alan McPherson.
He was the first African-American writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
The park, located at 1856 7th Avenue Court, was recently renovated and features a new playground, shelter, basketball court, and restroom.
The park will add a new sign with a memorial plaque later this summer.
McPherson died in 2016. For more on his life and career, click here.
