Nerves turned into confidence; Tristan Wirfs reflects on his first year in the NFL
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - To say Tristan Wirfs was on the fast track is an understatement. He had to start right away as a freshman at Iowa, three years later, he was an All-American and declared early for the NFL draft at age 21.
“It prepared me in a lot of ways,” Wirfs said when asked how his time at Iowa helped him. “I mean Coach Ferentz, the way he runs his program, they do the best to prepare you to be the best man, football player, everything.”
After he was selected in the first round by Tampa Bay, just like at Iowa, Tristan was thrown into the fire and had to start right away as a 21 year old rookie protecting the goat Tom Brady.
“I remember my first week of camp was rough. I was running against Shaq Barrett, JPP, I was like I don’t know if I can do this.” Wirfs said. “After a while, the nerves calm down a little bit and I just got settled in. Everything was fine.”
Tristan made a quick adjustment to the speed of the NFL and is a big reason the Buccaneers are in the Super Bowl. It’s been a fun ride in his rookie season and his Mom, Sarah, has been right there with him celebrating after every win with a pizza party.
