Iowa confirms first child death from COVID-19
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) -- The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) says an investigation into the death of a child in June has determined the child died from complications related to COVID-19.
According to IDPH, an investigation was started in June after the child died. The investigation was completed on August 6 and the death is now being reported to the public after ensuring the identity of the child would be protected.
The investigation into the death included extensive pathology, metabolic, and other tests. IDPH says those tests can take months to complete and certify depending on the complexity of the case.
Health officials say the child was under the age of 5 and had underlying health conditions.
IDPH says they have made every effort to protect the identity of the child.
