Flanagan sisters hold special bond through softball
TROY MILLS, Iowa (KCRG) - Grace and Abby Flanagan have shared a lot of memories together on the basketball court and on the softball field. However, it’s a little more special during the softball season. Abby is North Linn’s ace pitcher and her catcher just happens to be her twin sister, Grace.
“Originally, she (Grace) started off as a pitcher, too,” said Abby. “Eventually, I got the hang of it more than she did a little bit. Our dad says that I had a little bit more accuracy, so she eventually just fell into the catcher’s role.”
“I remember when I did want to be done,” said Grace. “Then my dad says, ‘You’re going to catch her (Abby) then.‘”
Yes, Grace and Abby have always been on the same teams growing up, but being a pitcher-catcher duo is a completely different relationship.
“It definitely feels a little closer than basketball,” said Abby. “In basketball, you’re on the same team and everything, but so are the other three girls that are on the court. For softball, it just feels a lot closer because it starts with me and her.”
They’ve become quite the dynamic duo. They haven’t lost a conference game in three years. This season, Abby also collected her 100th career win and 1,000th career strikeout. She always reminds everyone that Grace deserves a lot of the credit, too.
“She’s been there for every one, too,” Abby said. “I know that she supports me and I support her, back.”
Unfortunately, this will be the last season Abby and Grace will be a pitcher-catcher duo. Both of them will attend Des Moines Area Community College, but Grace will play basketball, while Abby will continue with softball. That doesn’t mean they won’t stop helping each other.
“I’ll probably be at most of the games, still,” said Grace. “Probably still give her some coaching after the game, but she’ll probably do the same for basketball.”
