The Cedar Rapids Sizzlers beat the Hot Pink Grannies by a score of 62-39 in the championship game of the 9th annual Granny Basketball tournament, held on the afternoon of June 16 at Valley Southwoods High School, 625 South 35th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa.

The championship game was the culmination of the two-day event which involved teams from the central, eastern and northeastern parts of the state. Members of the Cedar Rapids Sizzlers include Lola Reisner, Susan Cahalan, Diana Marker, Linda Jennings, Charlotte Emerson, Linda Toerper, Lois Henderson, Roberta Lowery, Linda Mceowen, Lori Neblung, Dana Daves, Susan Hartley and Kathleen Sanders. Members of the Hot Pink Grannies include Carolyn Sutton, Judith Harms, Rebecca Webb, Linda Burke, Nancy Henning, Pamela Synder-wymer, Rita Leitzinger, Roxanne Menke, Jewell Chapman, Karen Gideon, Patsy Tallman and Mary Kay France. During the regular season, the Sizzlers were undefeated while the Hot Pink Grannies went five-one.

Granny Basketball is characterized by women age 50 and up playing six-on-six basketball. They wear vintage uniforms from the 1920s. The rules for the game do not allow running or jumping (although “hurrying” is permitted). Each team consists of two centers, two guards and two forwards.

The Granny Basketball Tournament was part of the 2013 Iowa Senior Olympics held at various venues in the Des Moines area. Other events included track and field, cycling, basketball free-throw, table tennis, Pickleball, swimming, bowling, golf, softball and horseshoes.

My vote for the most impressive athlete of the day at the Pigman Triathlon. I was stunned for a second when she came out of the water. Her dad quickly handed her the crutches, and there was no looking back for this young lady. Kudo's to her for a fantastic Triathlon today.

Experience firsthand the magic, the thrill, the competition, the suspense and more at this year’s 9th annual Granny Basketball Tournament, which will be held June 15-16 at Valley Southwoods School, 625 South 35th Street, West Des Moines, IA as part of the Iowa Senior Olympics. Games begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15.
Seventeen teams from around the state will compete for the coveted prize by playing an antique version of the famous half-court game which was popular in Iowa from 1935 to 1995. This older 1920s version features period costumes consisting of bloomers, middy blouses and stockings. Games are played in three courts instead of two. Teams consist of two guards, two forwards and two centers. No jumping, touching or running are allowed (although “hurrying” is ok). There are no timelines or lane restrictions and each player is allowed just three fouls.
Granny Basketball founder Barb McPherson of Lansing, Iowa, says the game appeals to the over-50 crowd because as well as social interaction, competition and camaraderie, the game promotes fun exercise and is gentler than the three-on-three game. The League’s oldest player is 87.
To get to Valley Southwoods School, located in West Des Moines, IA take Interstate-35 to the Mills Civic Parkway exit (Exit 70). Go east on Mills Civic Parkway to Fuller Road and turn right. Valley Southwoods is on the northwest corner of Fuller Road and South 35th Street.
The tournament is part of the Iowa Senior Olympics, which will be held at various venues in the Des Moines area during the month of June. Other events include track and field, golf, bowling, tennis, swimming, badminton, racquetball and Scrabble®.

The Bud Ride is a training event to get in shape for RAGBRAI. The cycling event is from North Liberty, through Oxford to Tiffen and back. It is a fun ride to practice riding skills such as a pace line as in the first photo. Pace lines a valuable to the rider by allowing you to go longer distances with less energy similar to drafting in NASCAR.
