I was headed to work in the early AM in the beginning of June when a mother deer who hangs out in my back yard and steals my bird seed crossed the road in front of me with a new baby trailing behind her. I stopped to let her pass, when a city truck zoomed past me and spooked the mom. She bolted into the woods behind my house. The baby was confused and headed for 42nd Street traffic. I tried to shoo her back toward her mom, but she ran out into traffic. I had no choice but to pick her up and place her in my back yard, hoping that her mom would return to claim her. Long story short, at the end of the day, a patient mommy reclaimed her baby, but not before we added a new member to our neighborhood "family". She still visits us every day and has acquired her mom's taste for my birdseed! My kids named her "Freckles", and her mom's name is "Blaze" for a white blaze on her haunch.
