About a year and a half after our 15 year old American Eskimo passed away my wife thought it was time to search for a new 4 legged member to join our family. To entice me she told me that she had thought of a name I might like- “Warner” after my football hero Kurt Warner! I think she secretly knew that I wouldn’t be able to resist that name, little did we know that our little puppy’s story would remind us so much of his namesake.
The day we went to check out the kennel of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier breeder we had located just happened to be the same day that a litter was born. It was a cold January day in Iowa, and after visiting with the breeder and seeing the dogs we just couldn’t resist placing a down payment in order to ensure ‘pick of the litter’. There were 6 puppies in the litter and 3 were boys. We left that day feeling excited and content that when we arrived 6 weeks later we would be able to get the ‘perfect match’ to our personalities among the three boys.
About a week later we received a call from the breeder informing us that the mother had fell ill with a virus and was unable to nurse. Despite the breeders vigilant efforts to bottle nurse, two of the boys and one girl had died. This left only 1 boy and although he was fighting she wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. The breeder offered to give our deposit back or we could wait and pick one out of the next litter which would be a few months down the road. It took only a few minutes for us to respond….we couldn’t possibly give up on our little Warner. We decided that with a name like Warner he was destined to beat the odds!!! We knew that if he even had half the determination and spirit as his namesake Kurt Warner he wouldn’t give up and we weren’t going to give up on him either.
Now I don’t expect my dog to ever work at Hy-Vee or shred defenses like Kurt does, but he can really tear into a paper bag or cardboard box. Warner is our superstar!
