The CRANDIC is back on the river for the first time in 12 months, since the 31 and a half foot surge that took out the old trestle back in June 2008. Work was being done on the tracks on Wednesday with ballast being laid, Maintenance of Way equipment tampering and smoothing ballast and track/signal maintainers gearing up the signals; getting things ready for the re-opening of the downtown main that connects the downtown corridor with northern Iowa railroads like Iowa Northern, Union Pacific and Canadian National.
The Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railroad is one of the oldest and continuous shortline railroads in America and operates over 100 plus miles of track including about 60 miles of mainline, running through 10 communities in four East-Central Iowa counties.
